MAIN contractor Thomas Johnstone Ltd (TJL) has started construction on the second phase of the Lower Gilmore Place purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) development in Edinburgh’s Fountainbridge area.
Once an industrial heartland of Scotland’s capital, Fountainbridge has undergone significant regeneration in recent years. The Lower Gilmore Place development, located along the Union Canal, aims to introduce high-quality student housing, fostering a sense of community and bringing new energy to the area.
This phase will add 82 student beds to the existing facility. The work follows the delivery of the first phase in 2023 – comprising a four-storey building with 69 studio apartments, communal gardens, and ground-floor social spaces.
TJL is continuing its partnership with Glencairn Properties and ISA Architects for this expansion project.
“We are delighted to embark on the second phase of the Lower Gilmore Place development,” said Campbell Ross, regional construction director at Thomas Johnstone Ltd. “Building upon the success of the first phase, we are committed to delivering high-quality, sustainable living spaces that meet the evolving needs of Edinburgh’s student population.”
The second phase is scheduled for completion ahead of the 2026 academic year.
