GMG Contractors has embarked on a five-year contract to deliver transformative home improvements to hundreds of properties across North Lanarkshire.

The Glasgow-based multi-disciplinary contractor has secured Lot 2 of a North Lanarkshire Council (NLC) contract to deliver roofing, rendering, and energy efficiency works to hundreds of council-owned, owner-occupier, and private sector domestic homes per year.

The work is valued at £29.7 million and will see GMG deliver vital upgrades including external wall insulation, solar PV, cavity wall insulation, and re-roofing. The goal is to make the properties more energy-efficient, resulting in a lower carbon footprint, cheaper energy bills, and a healthier living environment.

The majority of the homes are low-rise and part of the works may qualify for funding subsidies including EES:ABS (Energy Efficient Scotland: Area Based Schemes). The contract marks a continuation of GMG’s working relationship with North Lanarkshire Council, which started eight years ago and has seen the business provide upgrades to some 800 properties in the area during that time.

GMG’s Daniel McGinn explained, “This is the third North Lanarkshire Council contract we’ve tendered for. NLC as a local authority is very forward-thinking. This work will allow residents to heat their homes using less energy, which saves money and makes the properties more efficient and better to live in, as well as more aesthetically pleasing.”

Work is already underway in Newmains. GMG expects to directly employ through NLC between 60 and 70 people, while the contract also offers guaranteed security of work for the firm’s own employees and subcontractors for the next five years – many of whom live in North Lanarkshire.

GMG plans to deliver a range of community benefits over the course of the works. Daniel added, “We have committed to careers events and site visits from local schools to let young people see what construction is all about, and give them a flavour of the industry. We’ll also provide two work experience placements per year. As a business, we are extremely passionate about being part of projects that improve local communities and the overall environment.”
