Blantyre flatted blocks benefit from carbon reduction through construction

The Camelon Crescent properties have benefited from re-roofing works, external wall insulation, and new windows and doors

GMG Contractors has completed a six-month project to deliver transformative upgrades to five flatted blocks in Blantyre.

Working in partnership with South Lanarkshire Council, the Glasgow-based firm carried out tasks including re-roofing works, external wall insulation installation (EWI), and fitting new windows and doors at the identical blocks in the town’s Camelon Crescent.

The work was designed to improve the appearance, safety, and sustainability credentials of the properties, while also creating a more comfortable living environment for residents. The project involved extensive refurbishment and modernisation. GMG revealed a major success of the initiative was its focus on carbon reduction through construction.

EWI (featuring ROCKWOOL systems), heat retaining roofs, and upgraded windows and doors should all contribute to lower heating demands and energy bills.

Roofing improvements included the installation of new fascia, soffits, and guttering. Additional work included the provision of metal doors and door entry systems to enhance safety, and redecorating closes to refresh and modernise communal areas. Specialist concrete repairs were also carried out to restore structural integrity and liquid plastics were applied to balconies to aid with waterproofing and longevity.

The project ran from August 2024 to February 2025. Despite the winter conditions, the project was completed on schedule and GMG revealed its team ensured the site was cleared and disruption minimised during the Christmas break.

GMG’s Gary McGinn said, “We’re absolutely delighted with the final result of our work at Camelon Crescent, and we’re thrilled to have delivered a high-quality project for South Lanarkshire Council. Most importantly, we’re pleased to have improved the living environment for the residents, and we hope they’ll enjoy their upgraded homes for years to come.”
