A series of maintenance activities are being undertaken on the electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic services that govern the movement of the two funicular carriages up and down the Cairngorm Mountain.

The work comes in advance of Swiss funicular specialist, Garaventa, which supplied and maintain the carriages and control system of the funicular railway, arriving later this week to carry out scheduled annual inspections of the mechanical systems. The trains are expected to complete frequent trial runs over the next week.

Balfour Beatty will continue to lead remediation works will continue on the viaduct structure. Remediation work had been ‘substantially’ completed before Christmas, but inspections identified a range of items requiring further work – with the team returning to site in early January.

The Highlands and Island Enterprise, owner of the mountain estate, said it continues to aim for the funicular to be safely back in service ‘as soon as possible’ within the current winter season and will provide a firm date for relaunch once this can be confirmed.
