A team of engineers from Swiss funicular specialist Garaventa is to carry out ‘rigorous’ mechanical safety testing and trial operations on the Cairngorm funicular railway.

Garaventa will undertake the work once Balfour Beatty has completed remediation works on the railway.

The firm had completed an extensive programme to strengthen the 1.8km viaduct just before Christmas, with it focussing on the tension of joints, beams, and diaphragms. However, further work began this week after inspections identified areas where more work is required.

Once testing is complete, the railway will be handed over to resort operator, Cairngorm Mountain (Scotland), for staff training and final preparations prior to passengers being welcomed back onboard.

Whilst this is underway, the Cairngorm Estate owner, HIE, which has overall responsibility for the funicular reinstatement project, will continue to liaise with the Health and Safety Executive.
