Roofing firms urged to maximise daylight during winter

ROOF systems manufacturer Marley is reminding roofers of the importance of adjusting their work to make the most of limited daylight hours during winter.

In its recent industry research, 53% of roofing professionals surveyed by Marley highlighted a lack of daylight as being a key factor that impacts work schedules during winter months – with 60% experiencing delays to projects.

As part of its winter safety campaign, Marley is offering expert advice on how roofers can continue to work safely throughout the winter months – particularly as daylight hours dip.

Maximise daylight

Shorter daylight hours mean roofers need to work smarter to stay productive and safe. Good preparation the evening before, can help roofers make the most of an early start. This might include, planning how the work will be carried out, checking the roof is ready, and checking that all the materials are available prior to setting off for site.

Dan Redfern, marketing communications manager at Marley, said, “Whilst shorter daylight hours are always likely to affect work progress to some extent, good planning during the Winter months can ensure the workdays are effective as possible.

“By making the most of the daylight, roofers should be able to complete more of their projects in the safest conditions possible.”

Key tips for working in lower lighting conditions

While daylight hours remain short, here are some practical tips for roofers to stay safe while working in low light:

  • Adjust your schedule: Start work at first light (or as soon as the site opens) to maximise daylight hours before the sun sets. This will help you complete more of the project safely in natural light.
  • Be aware of fading light: In the afternoons, it’s essential to ensure that roofing operatives ensure they leave sufficient time to collect all tools and equipment and make their way safely to ground level before darkness descends.
  • Prioritise daylight-dependent tasks: Plan the most intricate or safety-critical tasks for early in the day when there is likely to be better light and save simpler tasks for later when the light begins to fade. In some special circumstances, it may be possible to work under artificial light, providing this in line with the job specific risk assessment and method statement (RAMS).

In addition to safety advice, Marley is also giving away 500 branded insulated mugs, together with a £5 Costa Coffee voucher to roofing contractors.

Dan added, “We know that the winter months can be particularly tough on roofers, but with the right planning and precautions, roofing can continue safely and successfully. Our campaign is about providing the tools and knowledge roofers need to face these challenges head-on.”
