THE winners of the Scottish Roofing Awards 2024 have been announced at an event in Glasgow.
The awards celebrate the work of NFRC members across Scotland. Winners were revealed at a luncheon held at The Grand Central Hotel, hosted by Tam Cowan and attended by a record audience of around 270 people including contractors, suppliers, and merchants.
NFRC president Colin McCorquodale said the awards ‘play a key part in recognising the work of those actual tradespeople on-site. It is always great to see them attend the awards ceremony’.
The Scottish Parliament has recognised the awards, with MSP Carol Mochan congratulating Lee Liddington for winning the Ronnie Forsyth Scottish Young Roofer of the Year award.
“Lee has been recognised for his high level of skill in traditional roof slating, which combines his strong work ethic with technical skills and problem-solving abilities, and recognises that his employer, DM Roofing & Roughcasting, in Kilmarnock, is a long-term supporter of roofing apprenticeships, having provided young people in the area with career opportunities for years, whilst promoting the industry as a career of choice to future generations,” Ms Mochan said in a motion submitted about the award, which several other politicians supported. Ms Mochan visited a group of DM Roofing & Roughcasting apprentices in August.
The Young Roofer of the Year award is named in honour of Ronnie Forsyth, who passed earlier this year. NFRC welcomed Ronnie’s wife, Ticia, to the ceremony. Ronnie was a valued member and friend of NFRC since the inception of NFRC Scotland. During his time with NFRC, he received the NFRC Pin of Honour, represented NFRC Scotland on many committees, and received special recognition for roofing at the NFRC Scotland Roofing Contractor of the Year Awards in 2009, amongst other accolades. He was also chair of NFRC Scotland from 1988 to 1991.
Colin’s McCorquodale’s company, Archibald McCorquodale & Son Ltd, was a finalist in the Roof Slating category for the firm’s Ferry Lodge project in Erskine, but missed out to the Glasgow University project completed by DM Roofing & Roughcasting Ltd. Despite not winning, Colin said, “This nomination is a real boost to all our staff and is recognition for the hard work of our entire team.”
