CALA Homes (West) has started the handover of 105 affordable homes to East Renfrewshire Council as part of the housebuilder’s masterplan at its Maidenhill community in Newton Mearns.

Within Cala’s development, 105 homes in three separate pockets – including a number of wheelchair-accessible units – are to be added to the local authority’s housing stock, boosting the supply and mix of properties for families waiting on new homes.

The properties are for social rent, provided by the council and include a mix of one-bedroom cottage flats, two-bedroom terraced homes and three and four-bedroom semi-detached houses.

The first residents have now moved in, and Cala will continue to hand over homes in a total of nine stages until January 2025.

Cala started construction at Maidenhill in 2018 and is now in the final phase of private homes with only five-bedroom properties available to reserve. The work in the new community also included the creation of a new school, Maidenhill Primary School, which officially opened in 2019, a new spine road and upgraded sewer works.

Gillian Hessett, land manager at Cala Homes (West), said, “Our Maidenhill development is a landmark development for Cala creating not just new homes but a new community, with plenty of green space at its heart. A fundamental part of our masterplan at this popular Newton Mearns location was the creation of 105 affordable homes and now this vision is turning into a reality.

“We are pleased to be delivering a range of homes to East Renfrewshire Council which will provide brand new and energy efficient homes for a wide range of residents, including families.”

Councillor Danny Devlin, East Renfrewshire Council housing and environment convener, added, “I am delighted that we’re going to provide people with such high-quality flats and houses. There is a strong community growing in Maidenhill, with a state-of-the-art primary school, so I know that our tenants will be very happy in their new homes.

“East Renfrewshire continues to be an extremely popular place to live, and we know that more people than ever are in need of a permanent place to call home, so it’s extremely important that we do all we can to create more social housing in the area. This development reflects our ongoing commitment to the people of East Renfrewshire and I commend Cala Homes (West) for the work undertaken here in Newton Mearns.”
