FLEMING Timber Structures has announced three new contract wins for a variety of main contractors across Scotland.
Spanning education, sport and funeral care, the business said the projects reflect the commitment to providing ‘high-quality timber engineering across a diverse range of industries’.
Fleming is partnering again with Morrison Construction on the £18.5 million contract to build the new Whitecraig Primary School in East Lothian. With the area enjoying a significant increase in population as a result of several new housing developments, the original school – first erected in 1959 – will be replaced with a new building featuring eight classrooms and a nursery/early learning facility. The project will feature a dedicated community entrance and improved pedestrian cycling safety measures.
Fleming Timber Structures is providing a structural solution incorporating timber frame panels, floor and roof cassettes, along with glulam beams over 15m in length.
Elsewhere, Fleming is working with Luddon Construction on the creation of the new Bishopbriggs Crematorium and associated development. Located within greenspace north of Bishopbriggs, the design includes offices, car parking, a new access road, and a landscaped garden of remembrance.
The building itself comprises of four linked elements; the entrance, waiting room and public toilets; main chapel building; facility offices; and the cremator room. Externally, a new three-arm roundabout will be constructed along with a new access road, drainage scheme, two bus stops, new footways, signage and kerbing.
Fleming revealed the design and approach has been continually refined with bespoke feature glulam trusses and engineered timber roof cassettes. Given the size of the glulam trusses, these were designed and manufactured in the firm’s onsite factory before being transported to site for installation. The project is expected to conclude in winter 2024.
The third new contract win is also in East Dunbartonshire, where Fleming will be supplying a full timber frame structural solution for the walls and roof to create a high-performance thermal envelope as part of work to breathe new life into Twechar Outdoor Pursuits Centre.
Working in collaboration with Morgan Sindall, the space will act as a hub for a variety of activities including cycling, kayaking, and canoeing.
Built on previously derelict ground and touted as a space for all ages, the centre will also function as a space for volunteering, education, and training.
