CLARK Contracts has completed the installation of roof lights at the 1889 hall at The Briggait Clydeside Market Hall in Glasgow.
The work comes as part of the firm’s £4.2 million refurbishment of the category-A listed building on behalf of Wasps Studio. Work includes safeguarding the roof of the 1899 and 1904 market halls, the repair of ageing floors and walls, and installation of new toilet facilities, a new entrance, a café, and a reception facing onto Clyde Street.
Marking the milestone of the completion of roof lights being installed, Glasgow City Council’s senior management team visited the site, alongside Scottish Greens co-leader and MSP for Glasgow, Patrick Harvie; Scottish Labour MP, Paul Sweeney; and SNP MP Alison Thewliss.
The project was also visited by master’s students and lecturers from the University of Strathclyde’s advanced construction technology and BIM course. During this visit, the project’s M&E consultant, Rybka, delivered a talk on the conservation strategy and the integration of building services within this historic building.
Michael Scanlan, director at Clark Contracts, added, “We are delighted to be involved in this project and breathe life back into The Briggait Clydeside Market Halls for the people of Glasgow to enjoy.”
Audrey Carlin, chief executive officer at Wasps, added, “This is a significant milestone in Wasps journey to reopen these magnificent halls to the public for the first time in 50 years. Once complete, the Clydeside Market Halls will provide a unique cultural and heritage offer in Glasgow City Centre, with regular markets, events and food and drink offers.”
