St Luke’s High School pupils in Barrhead have named a new Cala Homes (West) development located opposite the school grounds, on Springfield Road, and adjacent to Aurs Road.
More than 40 S3 pupils participated in the competition, which tasked the youngsters to draw inspiration from the town’s history and the development’s location as part of their research.
Cala Homes (West) received more than 60 worthy suggestions, but it was pupils Richard Albin, (13) and Andrew Jameson (14) who impressed the housebuilder with Aurs Meadows and were crowned the winners.
Both pupils received a £150 retail voucher, with Cala Homes (West) also gifting a £1,000 donation to the school to spend towards resources of their choice.
The housebuilder secured planning consent to deliver Aurs Meadows in April 2024. The site will feature 346 homes, comprising a mix of housing types including terraced, semi-detached and detached properties, and range from two-bedroom starter homes to five-bedroom villas. The plans also include provision for a retail facility.
As delivery of the development progresses, Cala will continue to support St Luke’s High as part of its Community Pledge initiative.
Hannah Ireland, marketing manager at Cala Homes (West), said, “We were incredibly impressed at the suggested development names put forward by the pupils, which were both considered and creative. Andrew and Richard should be very proud of their winning suggestion, which will now become part of Barrhead’s history. We’re really looking forward to building on our relationship with the school as we bring Aurs Meadows out of the ground and deliver much-needed new homes for the local region.”
Alan Boyle, design & technology teacher at St Luke’s High school, added, “We are thrilled to be part of the process of naming the planned Cala site. The competition created a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to contribute to Barrhead history. Our winning students, Andrew and Richard, are immensely proud that their suggestion was chosen for the new estate. I believe the true significance of their contribution will sink in once they see the signage going up and witness the housing development progress.”
Groundworks are due to commence in late summer 2024 with the first homes scheduled to be released for sale in spring 2025.
