DETAILS for the ‘long-awaited’ Swallow Roundabout improvements in Dundee have been announced with a start date confirmed for the work.
The project will begin on Monday June 17 and is expected to complete in summer 2025.
The improvements to the roundabout on the A90 will be led by Springfield Properties, which is developing the Dykes of Gray village which sits just off the roundabout. These enhancements are necessary to manage the increased traffic as development in the area progresses and will also improve active travel routes for pedestrians and cyclists.
The proposals have been approved by Transport Scotland, Dundee City Council, Perth and Kinross Council and Angus Council. The improvements will be carried out by Luddon Construction, and include:
- A lane added to the approach of the junction from Perth on the A90, for a left turn only to Dykes of Gray, Landmark hotel and to Liff
- A new lane added from Dykes of Gray towards the A90 northbound
- Traffic lights added on all approach roads to the roundabout which will enhance efficient traffic flows
- A set of lights on approach to the roundabout from Dundee, which will for the first time provide controlled pedestrian access
Most of the activity will be done overnight to prevent disruption as much as possible and to ensure the safety of workers. During certain points of the improvement works, temporary diversions will be clearly marked, and people can visit the Springfield website for the latest information.
Dykes of Gray already has over 300 occupied homes, a local convenience store, a collection of play areas and public art. The wider plans include amenities such as a nursery, retail and office spaces, as well as community parks and recreational areas.
Springfield chief executive Innes Smith said, “The works we are undertaking at the Swallow Roundabout will deliver long-term benefits for the community, improving connectivity for residents, visitors and passers-by alike. The enhancements are designed to significantly enhance both capacity and traffic flow, whilst offering a safe active travel route across the junction, however the nature of this type of project means that there will likely be some disruption for regular users, with planned diversions required at points throughout the project.
“We thank those who regularly use this junction in advance for their patience whilst we implement these improvements and encourage everyone to visit our website to find out when diversions will be in place and plan accordingly.”
