Fleming shortlisted for two industry awards

Thomas Graham Community Library

FLEMING is celebrating after two of the Lenzie-based contractor’s projects were shortlisted for RICS Scotland Awards.

The Thomas Graham Community Library project in Strathblane has been nominated in the Community Benefit category, while the Bridge Street Depot building in Girvan for South Ayrshire Council is in contention in the Public Sector category.

The Thomas Graham Community Library initiative was driven and funded by the local community, who secured £1 million of finance.

Fleming, on behalf of Strathblane Community Development Trust (SCDT), was tasked with creating a new community library to replace the village’s existing facility, which had operated from a 40-year-old temporary building.

The new facilities provide a modern library and community space, developed to be highly sustainable by making use of a glulam and timber frame structure and designed to maximise the natural surroundings.

The project, a partnership between SCDT and Stirling Council, represents the first community-council partnership to deliver library services in Scotland: a blend of charitable and donor finance, community enterprise and local authority expertise.

The design team included 3C Construction Cost Consultants, Thomas Robinson Architects, Irons Foulner Consulting Engineers, and David Narro Associates.

The Bridge Street Depot, meanwhile, is a new building for South Ayrshire Council that serves as the central hub for grounds maintenance, waste management, and golf operations staff, offering welfare facilities, offices, and meeting rooms.

Fleming revealed that significant effort was made in adopting a fabric-first approach, rooted in Passivhaus principles. The building design, including its integrated systems, is projected to save eight tonnes of CO2 each year, with a ‘carbon neutral’ EPC rating.

The design team on this project comprised Storrier & Donaldson, South Ayrshire Council, Innovated Design Solutions, and FLN Consulting Engineers.

In a statement, Fleming commented, “We’re delighted to have the innovation and hard work of the teams on these projects recognised in such a prestigious way, with fellow shortlisted projects being of incredibly high standard.”

Regional finals will take place in May-June this year, with winners being invited to a national grand final ceremony in October.
