Clark completes major refurbishment of historic Warrender Swim Centre

CLARK Contracts has completed the refurbishment of the B-listed Warrender Swim Centre for Edinburgh Leisure.

The Victorian-era baths consists of a 25-yard pool, sauna and gym facilities with stone elevations and pitched slate roofs with rooflights.

As part of the extensive refurbishment, the main contractor undertook external repairs of the building elevations and pitched slate roofs including timber repairs, repointing, repairs to defective render, infill of redundant roof lights and openings, and other restoration works.

Internal refurbishment works included the removal of partitions, screens and cubicles to create new layouts. Structural slappings were also completed to form new openings within the building.

Michael Scanlan, Clark Contracts director, said, “Having delivered over £45m of listed building refurbishment projects in the past three years, we were delighted to complete these refurbishment works for Edinburgh Leisure to allow the historic building to continue to serve the local community.”

Jo Mathieson, head of facilities management at Edinburgh Leisure, added, “Originally known as Warrender Baths, the venue has been serving the community since 1887 and this major investment will ensure Warrender Swim Centre, as it now known, will continue to serve the community for many years to come. The latest major investment was about maintaining the balance of Victorian charm and an environmentally efficient 21st century facility, and, of course, improving the customer experience.”
