THE steel framework of the new platform one building at Troon Railway Station has been fully installed.
A fire destroyed the original platform one building in 2021, with Network Rail working with partners, stakeholders, and the community since to develop the design of the reconstructed building.
AmcoGiffen is lead contractor on the project, which will see the platform one building built to modern standards, with it to include a ticket office and waiting area, as well as a changing places facility for those with disabilities.
The project team has successfully installed the steel which forms the framework of the structure and creates the footprint for the new building, with the framework comprising 127 pieces of pre-fabricated steel extending more than 400m in length and weighing approximately nine tonnes.
The steel was lifted into position by a telehandler and bolted in place by operatives working from mobile elevating work platforms. Engineers will pour the concrete slab that will become the floor of the building as part of the next phase.
Network Rail is working towards completing the construction of the station building ahead of The Open being held in Troon in July 2024.
Louise McSmith, Network Rail’s project manager for the Troon station redevelopment, said, “We are pleased with progress since the return to work following the festive break. We worked around the clock to erect the steel framework and with it in place, you begin to really get a sense of the scale of the new building.
“Passengers using the station have paused on their way through to take a look at the ongoing works and the reaction to see the building coming out of the ground has been really positive.”
