Contract Flooring Association turns up the heat on winter weather challenges

THE Contract Flooring Association (CFA) has launched a winter warning campaign, aimed at improving site conditions for the installation of flooring during cold weather.

The organisation said one hurdle consistently faced by flooring contractors is the unpredictable nature of site conditions. Particularly in winter, the absence of adequate heating on-site can pose significant issues and impact the quality of flooring installations.

Without adequate heat on site, the CFA said floors will fail, and is appealing to main contractors and builders to join together in ensuring optimal conditions for successful flooring projects.

The CFA explained that flooring contractors often find themselves in situations where ambient temperatures fall below the recommended range of 18 to 27 degrees Celsius. The implications of this extend beyond mere discomfort; it directly influences the performance of subfloors, adhesives, and various materials essential to the installation process. Resilient and textile sheet materials, in particular, become challenging to handle and cut without proper acclimatisation.

British Standards provide guidance on maintaining correct temperatures for the installation of resilient, timber, and textile materials. The CFA’s 2022 Guide to Contract Flooring, available for free on its website, addresses heat concerns and also emphasises the importance of lighting and effective coordination with other trades.

To assist in addressing the heating challenge, the CFA provides its members with support materials including a winter warning card, described as a practical on-site tool indicating temperature conditions that helps to create awareness about the significance of suitable temperatures for flooring installations. Members are also provided with a poster that can be put on noticeboards to help explain and remind of the necessary requirements.

The CFA added that the ‘Winter Warning’ cards have proven instrumental when working with clients facing challenging temperature conditions. This collaborative effort aims not only to enhance the quality of flooring installations but also to foster a mutual understanding among clients.
