Revised plans for Aberdeen Market approved

A revised planning application for the build of the new Aberdeen market building has been approved by Aberdeen City Council.

To be built by Morrison Construction on Union Street, The Green, and Market Street at a site previously occupied by a BHS store, the project will bring an ‘attractive’ market-style floorspace to create a destination venue that promotes local produce and goods alongside continental-style delicatessens, cafés, and food outlets.

The design of the market building will feature a mixture of fixed indoor units of various sizes alongside space for temporary and pop-up facilities to allow for increased variety and would be flexible to seasonal requirements. There will also be the flexible-use outside space which could be used for music, watching major sporting events, or for further market space.

Planning permission for the new venue was granted in May last year, with a range of revisions coming following feedback from the market’s potential operators.

The revisions included the removal of the external canopy to The Green being removed to allow for a more flexible open events space, as well as enabling the opening up of the site and surrounding space more.

A statement ‘floating roof’ will also be added to the main building, with the former BHS space becoming a covered link to the market with a glazed facade. Lifts and escalators will be moved to inside of the market hall, whilst improved landscaping and accessibility will be added to the Market Street entrance as well as public art being commissioned for external facades and entrances.

Councillor Ciaran McRae, of Aberdeen City Council’s planning development management committee, said, “It is to be welcomed the committee members agreed unanimously to the revised planning application today.

“The market development will create a vibrant and exciting new destination for people to visit in the city centre, as well as create an improved connection between Union Street, The Green, and the bus and train stations.”
