Time capsule buried to honour legacy of historic Edinburgh site

A time capsule has been buried by pupils from The Donaldson Trust at the Playfair at Donaldson’s in Edinburgh to celebrate its new legacy.

The Donaldson Trust originally occupied the A-listed building, which has been transformed into apartments by City & Country.

Staff and pupils were invited by the developer to visit the development and share items for the time capsule which was buried on site. This included information about current pupils at the school, hand drawn pictures, and handmade items.

The time capsule burial will not only honour the site’s legacy and historic significance as a former school but will celebrate the last three remaining homes for sale on-site as The Playfair at Donaldson’s almost comes to an end.

Angela Evans, deputy head teacher from The Donaldson Trust, commented, “Our visit to The Playfair at Donaldson’s was an exciting opportunity to visit our former school and encourage our pupils to learn about the past history of their school. The young people were really interested to see how the former school has been transformed, especially as some of our group had worked at The Playfair when it was the school, or had family who had previously attended. One of our staff here used to teach in one of the classrooms which we were able to visit.

“Thank you to City & Country for providing us with this interactive learning experience and allowing the children to include their creations which one day, years from now, will be dug up and explored – a concept which they found very exciting!”

Jennifer Rhodes-Finch, head of marketing at City & Country, added, “The Playfair at Donaldson’s has been a very popular development, and it was important for us to honour its history and the success we have had on-site so far. I’d like to thank the staff and pupils of The Donaldson Trust for making this historical celebration so special and bringing along such thoughtful items to include in the time capsule. In combination with our development brochures and information I hope we have effectively painted a picture of life in The Playfair at Donaldson’s during 2023.”
