Safe digging ‘anxiety’ keeping Brits awake at night

NEW research from LSBUD has claimed that Brits are embarking on so many DIY projects that concerns about staying safe while digging are keeping them awake at night.

More people are searching for safe digging advice in the middle of the night than during the day. LSBUD revealed that Google searches for safe digging-related terms peak at 4am, with the majority of activity happening between 1am and 4am.

By contrast, Brits are less likely to lose sleep over tax returns, MOTs, mortgage rates and medical issues.

LSBUD, an online safe digging resource, reports that the amount of digging taking place is at an all-time high, with online searches 72% higher than this time last year.

The top excavation anxieties include planting a tree, laying a patio, building a shed, putting in fence posts, and building an extension.

Over the three-month period, Brits searched for ‘how to plant a tree’ more than 13,000 times and there were more than 1,100 searches for ‘cheap DIY underground bunker’.

Richard Broome, MD at LSBUD, said, “The fact so many people are thinking about these types of activities and projects in the middle of the night suggests that people may have embarked on a digging project and have suddenly had that panic moment when they realise that they could have perhaps operated more safely. It is great to see people are concerned about staying safe, and this should always be number one priority, but to avoid such panics we urge everyone to get into the habit of completing thorough underground searches before commencing any digging activity.

“Here at LSBUD we are passionate about helping to provide that first step to raise awareness of digging safely. A search takes a few minutes to complete, plus, they are free – and will quickly tell you if there are pipes or cables you risk hitting with your digging.”
