Turfing of Aberdeen’s Union Terrace Gardens marks completion of £25.9m transformation

PREPARATORY groundworks are underway at Aberdeen’s Union Terrace Gardens to improve the site for turf to be laid in a couple of weeks.

The work will mark the completion of the £25.9 million transformation, led by Balfour Beatty, of the greenspace in the city centre.

Construction was completed in late December last year, however the turfing of the area was put on hold to accommodate the Spectra light festival in February and to ensure conditions were as best as they could be.

Aberdeen City Council said the ground was compacted due to the festival, but the warm and sunny weather has meant that conditions are good for preparatory works and for the turf to bed in with a ‘minimal’ timescale.

The local authority added, These works now complete the refurbishment of the Gardens with improved wheelchair access and includes new amenities such as a new play area for children, toilets, and cafes while restoring historic features.

“The Union Terrace Gardens improvements are part of the City Centre and Beach Masterplan which is designed to invigorate both areas while respecting and enhancing Aberdeen’s unique qualities and characteristics. The Masterplan projects are also aimed at encouraging more walking and wheeling.”
