Glasgow’s SWG3 unveils hotel plans

SWG3 has unveiled plans for the build of a hotel at its Yorkhill campus in Glasgow on land at Sandyford Street/Kelvinhaugh Street/Eastvale Place.

The arts and events space said the plans come at a time when the area of Glasgow it is located in prepares to undergo ‘transformational change’ over the next decade.

Following a series of studies, SWG3 proposals show a ‘distinctive’ architectural expression articulated by three stacked volumes ‘expressing the hierarchy of the internal uses’ and leading up to the rooftop spaces with views of the river.

The ground floor arrival point comprises a three-storey centralised atrium which visually connects the reception and lobby area, with the bar and canteen area on the first floor. Described as the ‘centrepiece’ and ‘gateway’ to the hotel concept, SWG3 said it will showcase contemporary art and design whilst creating a place for guests, neighbours, and visitors to meet and mingle.

The second floor features a workspace and wellness space, with the lower five floors providing a mix of standard room types whilst the upper floors feature studios, suites, and terrace suits.

In total, the hotel would feature 139 bedrooms, a three-bed duplex penthouse with terrace, two restaurants, two bars, a roof terrace, co-working spaces, meeting and private dining rooms, and a gym and movement studio.

SWG3 added that the hotel building will make a ‘positive’ contribution to the wider townscape and skyline, with the building’s ‘distinctive’ form and massing promoting ‘legibility’ and ‘wayfinding’.

A proposal of application notice was submitted to Glasgow City Council in May, which signalled the events space’s intent to submit an application for planning permission.

The local community and other stakeholders are invited by SWG3 to review its proposals before the planning application is submitted, with feedback able to be provided here. A further public event is also set to take place on August 3, where SWG3 will provide feedback regarding the views gathered during the pre-application consultation.
