WORK is set to begin later this year on the build of 125 homes at the Athletes’ Village in the east end of Glasgow.
The site was delivered as part of the city’s hosting of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, with 700 houses and flats coming in the first phase of works.
Glasgow City Council has now approved a variation in the terms of the development agreement between it and City Legacy Limited which means the second phase of the Athletes’ Village can now proceed in one stage rather than the original two.
The original agreement would have seen 49 houses built in the first phase, with 76 in the second. A key reason for the phasing was the location of the ‘SP’ site, owned by Scottish Power and to be acquired by the council, and at the time, the phasing arrangements were designed around this.
The ‘SP’ site is now available, and so the local authority said it makes commercial sense that construction works commence in one phase.
Councillor Ruari Kelly, convener for neighbourhood services and assets at Glasgow City Council, said, “The Athletes’ Village was a landmark development for Dalmarnock and the east end of Glasgow, bringing high-quality for sale and social rent to the area and was clearly a catalyst for the wider and ongoing regeneration of this part of the city. The approval of the development agreement would allow the construction of the second phase of the development to begin, with all the economic and social benefits this will bring to Glasgow.”
