Final phase of construction work complete at £20m Prestwick campus

THE final phase of construction work at Prestwick North Education Campus has been completed.

Glenburn Primary, St Ninian’s Primary and the new Prestwick North Early Years Centre moved into the new buildings in August last year, and a new all-weather pitch was completed just before Christmas. This final phase of work handed over to South Ayrshire Council completes the remaining external areas, including the rest of the playground and staff car park.

The £20 million project was delivered by hub South West Scotland, with main contractor Morgan Sindall.

Designed by BDP architects, the design of the buildings is said to have created ‘inspiring’ modern spaces for teaching and learning, and this final phase of work puts the buildings in their intended setting. The playground provides a varied environment for play and learning, including an allotment garden, amphitheatre and tunnels below grass mounds.

The buildings incorporate solar panels, heat pumps and other sustainable measures, as well as a ‘highly insulated’ envelope. Data on the building’s performance so far indicates energy consumption has decreased by 61%, when comparing the new campus with the two schools it replaced.

A formal opening ceremony will be held for the new campus in June 2023.

Councillor Stephen Ferry, South Ayrshire Council’s portfolio holder for education, said, “Prestwick North Educational Campus is providing pupils and staff with a modern and engaging environment for learning. We’re continuing the transformation of learning in South Ayrshire with our school build programme, and I’d like to extend my thanks to everyone involved in making this project a huge success. I know pupils are thriving in their new environment.”

Stuart Parker, MD of Morgan Sindall’s Scotland team, added, “We are delighted to handover the keys to Prestwick North Education Campus after completing the final phase of external works. Our team, including our invaluable local supply chain, have worked tirelessly on this development and thanks to a shared vision with our project partners, we have created a sustainable and inspiring state-of-the-art place to learn.”
