THE best new public and commercial buildings in Scotland have been celebrated at the Scottish Property Awards in Edinburgh.
The competition honours achievements in the real estate sector with over 650 guests in attendance at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre.
Property Company of the Year, the ‘ultimate’ award of the night, sponsored by Royal Bank of Scotland, was presented to Miller Developments. The judging panel praised the company for a ‘landmark’ year with major large-scale developments totalling over 1.5msq.ft. of commercial space.
Three universities collected awards for their property development work. Stirling University’s campus central collected two prizes for its major public area project designed and delivered by Page\Park Architects and Robertson. They collected Architectural Excellence Award (Public Use) and the ESG Refurbishment of the Year. The judges praised the ‘high quality’ work to repurpose the campus in a dramatic transformation of the civic space.
The University of Glasgow won Development of the Year (Public Buildings) for the Mazumdar Shaw Advanced Research Centre and Heriot Watt University was commended for its new robotics centre, the National Robotarium.
In Large Scale Commercial Development, Knight Property Group collected an award for its Belgrave Logistics Park in Bellshill and also in the west, Urban Union won Regeneration for its continued work at Lauriston. Drum Property collected the award for Build to Rent Development of the Year for its Solasta Riverside Project in Glasgow.
The Deal of the Year category, sponsored by PMP, was awarded to QMile Group at Haymarket and the Complex Lease Arrangement to Edinburgh City Council for a new Hyatt Centric Hotel. The 350-bed hotel has been tipped to bring ‘significant’ economic impact to the area and improve the strength of the EICC as an international event destination. (M&G Real Estate, QMile Group, Hyatt Hotels, Edinburgh City Council).
The ‘ultimate’ individual award, the Business Leadership Award, was presented to Stuart Heslop, former MD of real estate finance at Royal Bank of Scotland. Sponsored and presented by Faithful + Gould, Heslop announced his retirement from the bank after 35 years of work in the sector and is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the UK for real estate finance. In his final year in the role, he led a team of 15 in four cities with a lending book of over £4 billion and had approved £866 million of new investment spent directly into real estate development.
Alan Robertson, chair of the judging panel, commented, “Thank you to everyone who entered and participated in the 10th annual Scottish Property Awards and to our major sponsors Peace Recruitment and PMP. I send you all our very many congratulations and wish you all continued success in the year ahead.”
