TWO grid transformers have been successfully delivered to the £566 million Viking Energy Wind Farm in Shetland under a police convoy.

The transformers will make up part of a substation at will become the UK’s largest onshore energy wind farm.

Starting their journey in Linz in Austria, the Siemens 135MVA Transformers had a delivery weight of 94 tonnes each, before weighing 122.4 tonnes once fully assembled.

Stakeholder manager for Viking Energy Wind Farm, Aaron Priest, said,“The delivery of these transformers marks a major milestone in the Viking Energy Wind Farm project. The transformers required a police escort to move them from Lerwick Port to site due to their scale.

“We would like to thank drivers and residents for their patience while this complex delivery took place. Public safety is paramount and in co-operation with Police Scotland, our team did their very best to keep disruption to a minimum.”
