Work begins on ‘once in a generation’ opportunity at Candleriggs Square

GRAHAM has announced that work is underway on the delivery of the £62 million Candleriggs Square project in Glasgow.

The contractor said the project is incorporated into the ‘once-in-a-generation’ regeneration of Candleriggs Quarter in the Merchant City district. GRAHAM has been appointed by Drum Property Group as one of the contractors to deliver the £300 million phased regeneration scheme which combines residential accommodation, offices, hotels, restaurants and local amenities, together with landscaping, walkways and a new public square.

The build comprises the design and construction of a 17-storey structure that will accommodate 346 Build To Rent (BTR) residential units, featuring a mix of studio, one, two, and three-bedroom properties, including six duplex penthouse apartments.

The building will also house a communal dining space, gym, business lounge and games room, and will feature associated public amenities, retail shells and car parking areas.

The site had lain derelict for more than a decade.

The project is scheduled for completion in summer 2024.

Gary Holmes, GRAHAM regional MD (building), said, “We are proud to be part of this once-in-a-generation opportunity at Candleriggs Square that will breathe new life and revive the Merchant City area of Glasgow. Work is progressing well on site already and, with a structure of this height, we are excited to see its construction develop as it rises into the skyline to become a welcome addition to the city’s landscape.

“Across Glasgow, we have consistently delivered exemplar projects in the Build To Rent and residential markets such as Base Glasgow for the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Scotway House. We will apply this technical expertise at every stage of the Candleriggs Square process to ensure the successful realisation of the joint vision of Drum Property Group and Stamford Property.”

The 3.6-acre, phased regeneration programme is led by joint venture developers, Drum Property Group and Stamford Property Investments.

Graeme Bone, MD of Drum Property Group, added, “It represents a significant step forward in the long-awaited regeneration of one of Glasgow’s most prominent gap sites, driving forward the evolution of Candleriggs Square which has quickly established itself as one of Scotland’s largest and most important commercial and residential development sites. This will be a huge boost to the area and to local businesses. We can look forward to bringing back to life a very special area which has always been at the centre of Glasgow’s commercial and social development.”

GRAHAM is currently working with Drum Property Group on four separate projects as part of the £500 million Buchanan Wharf development on the south bank of the River Clyde.

Uri Goldberg, MD of Stamford Property Investments, commented, “Candleriggs Square offers an unprecedented regeneration opportunity for both the Merchant City and Glasgow city centre. We are committed to working in partnership with local people, groups and organisations throughout all stages of the development.”
