PLANS to build a new state-of-the-art leisure centre and theatre in Eastwood have moved to the next stage, East Renfrewshire Council has confirmed.
As part of the initial steps in the planning process, a formal consultation is to commence today (May 12) to allow residents to have input into the final design of the centre in preparation for the submission of a full planning application.
The proposals for the new facility, which will be built in Eastwood Park, include a leisure centre, theatre, library and cultural facilities. Current plans detail that the leisure centre would include a 50m pool, a 20m training pool, a family fun pool with flume, a six-court games hall, large gym area and four fitness studios.
The council said that it anticipates work to begin in early 2022, with the new building being constructed at a site adjacent to the current facility – allowing for it to continue operation during the construction period, ensuring no major disruption to leisure provision until the new facility opens in 2024.
East Renfrewshire Council leader, Tony Buchanan, said, “This is a significant milestone in our plans to deliver vastly improved leisure and culture facilities in Eastwood. We want to provide the very best facilities for our residents, so it’s important that we hear directly from our communities what they would like to see in this new facility, to help shape the final proposal which is put forward for planning permission. This is the first step in the planning process and I look forward to seeing the full application being put forward following this important period of consultation.”
