INDUSTRY analyst Barbour ABI has revealed RJ McLeod took ‘top spot’ in its latest top 50 contractor league table after being appointed to lead the £500 million Viking Wind Farm project in the Shetland Isles, which will comprise of 150 wind turbines and construction of substations, quarries and 62 miles of access road.

ISG was second on the list after securing five awards totalling £221 million. This includes the build of an Amazon distribution centre in Dartford.

The latest edition of the top 50 contractor activity report highlights the number and value of construction contracts awarded in the UK during July. The data shows the combined value of contracts awarded to the top 50 was just under £4 billion with a total of 165 projects.

For July, Morgan Sindall was the busiest contractor with a total of 13 projects at a combined value of £87 million.

Tom Hall, chief economist at Barbour ABI & AMA Research said, “Top 50 contract awards recovered strongly in July to more usual levels of £3.9 billion compared to 2019 average of 3.2 billion and January to March 2020 average of £3.9 billion. However, there was likely to be a bow wave of projects now being green-lighted after lockdown and furlough. Given the uncertainty over the recovery in the wider economy the future planning pipeline is also currently uncertain.”
