VITRAL, which is now part of VELUX Commercial, manufactured bespoke glazing solutions for the intu Metrocentre in Gateshead as part of a multi-million-pound investment programme.
Edinburgh-based architects, CDA Group, was appointed to undertake the re-configuration of the former Mediterranean Village dining space.
The brief specified that the mall had to retain as much of the existing shell construction as possible to deliver cost efficiency, and construction had to be managed to avoid interruption to trade or to public access between the mall areas.
In a bid to maximise the daylighting potential, CDA opted for the VELUX Glazing Panels, previously known as Vitral A74 roof glazing. The panels are said to offer several key benefits, including suitability to be self-supporting.
Openable Glazing Panels could also be integrated into the glazing scheme to allow for smoke-ventilation, thereby contributing to the centre’s fire strategy.
