Roof windows help light up bothy conversion

A home in Crawton, Aberdeenshire, has been crowned the winner of the 2018 VELUX Roof Window Award.

The Nether Cowieswells bothy conversion, designed by HYVE Architects, was the unanimous favourite of this year’s judging panel.

Using VELUX roof windows in the original structure’s gable, HYVE Architects managed to achieve maximum light deep into the converted space.

Jane Duncan, former president of the RIBA, described Nether Cowieswells as the “most simple and elegant of remodeling projects which subtly introduces the wonderful local light through VELUX roof windows to enhance the clarity of the spaces”.

HYVE will receive £2,000 in prize money and a VELUX curved glass rooflight for use in their next project.
