£13m Aberdeen school a “wonderful environment” for pupils

MORGAN Sindall has announced the completion of the £13 million Stoneywood School in Aberdeen.

The new building – which currently accommodates 434 pupils – is situated on the site of the former Bankhead Academy, which was demolished following a fire in 2012. The facility has been funded through Aberdeen City Council’s Capital Programme and comprises a two stream primary school and 60-place nursery.

Features at the 16-classroom school include solar UV panels, low energy central heating, a sensory garden, a library and a new 4G synthetic pitch. Morgan Sindall said the school is clad with natural aggregated cladding, larch timber cladding and zinc roofing.

Stuart Parker, managing director of Morgan Sindall Construction & Infrastructure in Scotland said, “We’re incredibly pleased to have completed this project for Aberdeen City Council and it’s great to have handed it over in time for the new 2018 school year. Stoneywood is the culmination of many months of collaborative work between the school, the council and all of the consultants involved. Everyone involved can take pride in transforming a once derelict site into a modern school fit for the 21st century – and one which will prove a valuable addition to the education offering in the area for generations to come.”

Councillor Douglas Lumsden added, “We are incredibly proud of the programme of school construction and Stoneywood is a very impressive new building. It will provide a wonderful environment for pupils and staff as well as for the wider community. The attention to detail is excellent and the design fits the needs of modern learning, providing the ideal platform.”

Director of architects Scott Brownrigg’s Edinburgh studio, Alex Donaldson commented, “Stoneywood School is a potent example of the power of open and inclusive collaboration. Aberdeen City Council had a clear vision for Stoneywood and Scott Brownrigg team and Morgan Sindall worked closely with the Council and key stakeholders to ensure this vision became a reality. We are very proud of Stoneywood School. This wonderful project adds to the range of high quality, on-vision portfolio of work being delivered out of the Edinburgh studio.”
