A “complex” Kirkcudbright factory expansion project has been recognised for a top architectural award.
Livingston-based Esh Border Construction delivered the £3.8 million redevelopment for pâté manufacturers Castle MacLellan Foods, ensuring the Dumfriesshire production facility remained operational throughout the works.
Designed by Taylor Architecture Practice Ltd, the extension aimed “to create a well-designed, industrial building that was a pleasurable working environment with a welcoming frontage in a riverside setting”.
Esh said the new reception block provides an “impressive and dynamic” welcome and rises up to a bridge, which spans the main goods-in area and links to the upper level of the existing factory. Other highlights include a new freezer building and dry goods facility, a new goods-in area, distribution corridor, additional storage buildings and new staff areas.
The expansion project began in January 2014 and was completed last October.
The scheme was recognised by RIAS when it recently announced the winners of the 2016 award for the best current Scottish architecture. Esh Border Construction and Taylor Architecture Practice will now be considered for the RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award, with the winner announced in November.
