MADE-to-order sliding sash windows and French doors from the Kensington & Chelsea range by Lomax + Wood have been specified in the sensitive restoration of a magnificent but dilapidated Georgian house to a four-storey island villa.
This once stately seafront property on the Ventnor esplanade, Isle of Wight, was built during the 1840’s in the Italian style.
The owners have carried out a painstaking four-year refurbishment to return this property to its original splendour and have preserved and replicated many of the original details including window shutters, cornices, fire places, skirting and some original tiled flooring. A stunning cantilevered stone staircase has been fully restored.
Doors and windows have been replaced with bespoke double glazed timber alternatives by Lomax + Wood that are sensitive to the Conservation area of Ventnor.
The traditionally operated sash windows, designed to capture historical detail and elegant sightlines, combine with modern manufacturing methods to provide acoustic and thermal performance fit for a 21st Century showpiece.
The double glazed French doors incorporate full height glazing and provide unhindered southerly sea and coastline views.
“The refurbishment included many thermally efficient systems and masses of insulation has been used throughout,” said Chris Wood, managing director, Lomax + Wood, “all of which has been enhanced with our high performance doors and windows which will ensure this property will be warm and comfortable.”
Lomax + Wood doors are made from high quality, knot-free hardwood as standard. Factory hung on hi-load lift off hinges with espagnolette locking, latch and mortice deadlock ensure maximum security and are internally glazed as an anti-burglar deterrent.
Box sash windows, made from European Redwood, are available with traditionally operated cords and weights, or with spring balances.
A single glazed alternative is available for very sensitive replacements where double glazed products would not be suitable.
Lomax + Wood’s products meet Part L of current building regulations, are fully weather-stripped for ultimate thermal and acoustic performance, CE marked and supplied with three coats of factory- applied micro-porous paint in a variety of RAL colours.
The company takes great care to produce timber windows and doors that recreate historical details.
One important design aspect of this is producing products without Swedish joints; these were introduced to enable faster output by mass produced manufacturers.
Lomax + Wood produce flush joints that have been tried and tested over centuries.
In some instances the Swedish joint can have a detrimental effect on the longevity of the frame and if not sealed correctly, or maintained, their design leads to a quicker deterioration of the joint.
This spectacular property received the Isle of Wight Conservation Award 2011 in recognition of the couple’s masterful restoration. The main house offers five-bedroom accommodation with a two-bedroom apartment on the lower ground floor. Lomax + Wood windows and doors provide wonderful views over the southern coast of the island from all of the main rooms. The area was particularly popular in the Victorian era, wealthy gentry attracted by the climate and picturesque surroundings.
