A bespoke solution by Polypipe, the UK manufacturer of plastic sustainable drainage products, got Barratt Homes out of hot water recently, when the housebuilder needed drainage to be installed under the main access road of a new development in West Yorkshire.
The original design had incorporated a concrete box culvert which would have required a long lead time as well as a crane and lifting platform to install it. Polypipe’s water management specialists, however, were able to come up with an easy-to-install solution a mere 6% of the weight of the concrete alternative.
From the drawings and soil investigation report, Polypipe’s technical team were able to calculate the exact structural strength of the pipe required. They also worked with the design consultant to undertake hydraulic checks to prove the integrity of the system.
Graham Hanna, of Hanna Civil Engineering, said: “Polypipe’s system had many benefits over the original specification. The Ridgistorm-XL solution was lighter and faster to install and needed less bedding materials and installation machinery, bringing significant cost savings and health & safety benefits.”
Polypipe’s Emma Nicholls said: “This was a textbook example of the time, installation and cost savings developers can achieve by tapping into our design expertise and understanding of regulatory drainage requirements.”
