Geotechnical specialist BAM Ritchies has installed the tallest rock-fall barrier in Europe, at Glen Douglas in Argyll.
A barrier 8m high had to be designed to cope with the slope and the potential size of boulders that could become loose.
BAM had previously undertaken extensive slope stabilisation at Glen Douglas, but one section was so large that the rock-fall barrier was the most appropriate solution to protect the road below.
Work has recently been completed, firstly with the piled and anchored foundations, and then with the barrier erection itself.
Angus McGregor, who, together with Rachel Long, led the BAM Ritchies team, commented, “I have worked on numerous slope-stabilisation, slope-protection and aerial-rigging projects around the country, but installing this monster is definitely one that has drawn together all the most challenging aspects of those previous works.
“There has been an exceptional team effort to bring this record-breaking catch-fence together.”
