THE Highland Council welcomed family members of Hamish Campbell and Campbell Port to the handover of its new social housing scheme in Golspie, which was built by Capstone Construction.

Representing the first Highland Council new build social housing properties in Golspie for 30 years, the £2.6 million Campbell Close development comprises 20 new homes of two, three, and four-bed villas, as well as two-bed cottages, and one-bed cottage flats.

The development is named in memory of Hamish Campbell and Campbell Port, who the local authority described as two ‘prominent and very missed’ members of the Golspie community.

Golspie-born Hamish served for 43 years as the local fish merchant and was also part of the Caledonian Pipe Band for over 40 years. Campbell Port was a quantity surveyor at the Highland Council and moved to Golspie in 1988 where he served on the community council and helped establish the Golspie Rowing Club in 2014.

Sutherland area committee chair, councillor Richard Gale, said, “It was a real pleasure to be there and to mark the opening of this new housing development and at the same time pay tribute to two sadly missed members of the Golspie community. Both Hamish and Campbell made a significant contribution to village life, and it is good that we can honour their memory in this way.”

Housing and property committee chair, councillor Glynis Campbell Sinclair, added, “It is wonderful to see this much needed housing development in Golspie completed. The Council are committed to improving the availability of affordable housing across Highland and this project delivers a wide range of different sized properties to meet the needs of the community. It is a fitting tribute for the development to be named after stalwarts of the community and leave a lasting legacy of their commitment to the area.”
