Colorado offers lifeline to young construction worker

LIVINGSTON-based Colorado Construction has stepped in to help a young construction worker carve out a career in the industry.

In March, West Lothian College sent a plea via the West Lothian Construction Forum. It was looking for a new employer to offer Jack Jenkins, one of its SVQ students, a joinery apprenticeship as he was in the process of being made redundant.

Colorado Construction answered the call, met Jack, and offered him a start to provide him with the security to continue his studies. He is now working with the firm’s project manager, Mark Kennedy, at the Kirknewton housing development.

Colorado explained that it is not easy getting into construction, and letting young people fall through the cracks is ‘even more damaging’ to the sector. The company thanked Alison Rogers (employer engagement & business development officer at West Lothian College) and Brenda Cumming (deputy CEO at West Lothian Chamber of Commerce) for recommending Jack.

Colorado director Mark Hamilton said, “Helping Jack (and others) to develop is how we can ensure a solid future for construction.”
